Abstract

Operating systems supplied by various companies are used with today's computers. These operating systems are generally designed to achieve highest performance in data processing and network management. The operating systems in use have some common features. Among these are multitasking, multi-usability, GUI-features and portability. It is extremely difficult to choose of these operating systems the one that is most appropriate for our purpose. This study aims to unveil the differences between the selected operating systems in terms of disk input/output operations. To this effect, writing and reading operations have been carried out on files of various lengths and the time periods for these operations have been measured. The comparative results will help users, such as companies, choose the operating system that is most appropriate for their purpose of use.
